London Students Ask God a Question…

Looking forward to speaking at the London wide university mission next week. We thought it was important to make this mission week dialogical from the beginning and so we asked students two simple questions:

1. If you could ask God any question what would it be?

The responses to these questions have formed the basis of the programme of lunch time talks that will be going on around campuses in London. With the usual format of 20 mins of food, 20 mins of talk and 20 mins of questions.

The Top 3 questions asked by London students:

1. Why do you allow suffering?

2. What is the meaning of life?

3. Is there life after death?

2. What is your favourite film?

These will form the basis for the evening talks where we will look at the themes presented in the top 3 movies and then explore how the story of Jesus intersects with the themes raised.

Movies discussed next week:

1. Lord of the Rings – Tuesday 24th of January at All Souls Langham Place, from 7.00pm

2. The Shawshank Redemption – Wednesday 25th of January at All Souls from 7.00pm

3. Inception – Thursday 26th of January at All Souls from 7.00pm

Here’s an excerpt from an article written by a London Student, Tim Wyatt on what is going on.

Students most want to ask God why he allows suffering to exist, followed by ‘What is the meaning/purpose of life?’ Perhaps showing a slightly morbid streak, ‘Is there life after death?’ was third in the list and the simple ‘Do you exist?’ was also a popular choice. In amongst these comparatively straightforward enquiries were more profound philosophical questions such as ‘Do you have a beard?’, ‘Why is my hair falling out?’ and ‘What is your favourite film?’ London students’ favourite films were less esoteric, with the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy topping the poll.

Using these results, CUs in London are holding Uncover: The London CU Project from the 23-27^th of January. During the day each CU will host lunchtime talks and other events such as debates or ‘Grill a Christian’ panel discussions on their campuses. On the evenings of the 24-26^th there will be a central event at All Souls Church, near Oxford Circus, presenting the Christian faith with opportunities for discussion via three of the most popular films: Lord of the Rings, The Shawshank Redemption and Inception.
