Adoption Sunday 2012

Going for a spin (Photo from gemsling's photostream, Flickr Creative Commons)

I am pulling together a list of resources that we will use in an adoption Sunday trial on Sunday 4th of November in Oxford churches.

The big idea is that National Adoption week kicks off on the 5th of November and we thought it would be great if the church was at the front of it.
We are running a trial to learn lessons for a possible national adoption Sunday in 2013.

We want to help make fostering and adoption mainstream within the UK church so that we inspire new foster carers and adoptive parents to step forward, encourage and support current foster carers, adoptive parents and their children but also look for ways the church can wrap around and support those families.

So in preparation we are  looking for great resources, making a “flat pack” service guide and shooting a short video. I’d love your help in pulling together good resources, so watch this space but also feel free to help me answer the following question:

Which songs shall we sing?

The songs I know that directly mention adoption are few and far between-. any songwriters fancy a new challenge?

1. Father God I wonder , By Ian Smale (Ishmael)

That’s a pretty terrible inditement of our lack of appreciation of the great fact of our adoption into God’s family. Either that or we just can’t think how to rhyme adoptioned / adopted with anything.

Songs about God’s Fatherhood

1. How deep the Father’s love for us- Stuart Townend

2. The Father’s Song – Matt Redmond

3. I’m Accepted, I’m forgiven - Rob Hayward

4. Be Thou My Vision – especially Thou my great Father, I Thy true son; Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

5. Wrap me in Your Arms - Gungor

6. When I was lost, Kate and Miles Simmonds

7. Children of the Heavenly King, Hymn

8. Father, Hill Songs United

9. You have saved us, Paul Baloche

Have you got any more songs for us to sing?

Here are some all age worship songs that might help:

1. I am not forgotten – Hill Songs Kids(very catchy)

Net Hymnal has 'Children of the Heavenly King' http://nethymnal.org/htm/c/o/cofthehk.htm (not all verses suitable) but this one is still in copyright and may be hard to get hold of:'Children of the Heavenly Father

    Translation by Ernst Olson, 1925'.

The main net hymnal website has other suggestions under 'Child' and 'Children' - though you might need to tweak the words a bit.

Hey Krish. Its a little old now, but 'Father God I Wonder' (Graham Kendrick)? Makes specific reference to being adopted into God's family and knowing His love and care.

krish, not sure if you'll remember me but i used to go to saltisford (a good 15 yrs ago) -it's more likely you'll remember my Dad :) this morning i was looking through some adoption info online, and at the bottom of a local agency's website was an article link by krishkandiah - what a strange and great thing!

    Hiya Krish,

Have you heard Joe King's 'Next to You' album?

    http://joekinguk.com/albums/next-to-you/

It explores various aspects of relationship and especially Father-child relationship. While it's possibly not suited to congregational worship, it might be good for 'background' before or after music (I don't know how your church does things!)

Perhaps especially 'My Love Will Last'?

    Dear Krish,

Did you know that the North London Adoption Consortium and the Churches Child Protection Advisory Service are hosting an event in September for church and faith leaders in London to talk about how we can get the message across better adoption. If you would like to know more, please email me

    Best wishes

    Hey Krish

Not a song.....but whilst I remember - you have to include a clip from the movie The Blind Side. A must. So many awesome touching moments in that film that would fit nicely.....

Does clash with IDOP for persecuted church (OD, CSW, Barnabas etc..) which a number of churches support

HI Krish - it would be great to know what resources you are putting together for that day. As a family we are having a thanksgiving service at our church for our newly adopted daughter. We are using a liturgy that has been produced by the Methodist chruch (I'm a Methodist minister).

We may be able to offer some resources but only after we've tried it out ourselves! Anything you have and/or are using would be great!

    Hi Krish,

this is a video link you could play from Third Day called 'Children of God'

I have to say I'm really excited of the potential of a national adoption Sunday. I pray the Adoption Sunday trial is a real success, and I'd be very interesting in receiving resources from it if it is to be rolled out nationally.
